Linksys is one of the most popular brands of home network routers. Linksys wireless routers support all of the common types of home and small business network setups. The Linksys Wireless-N products provide draft 802.11n capability, while Wireless-G products support 802.11g. A third category of product, dual-band routers, support more than one of the WiFi standards such as the Linksys Dual-Band Wireless A+G supporting both 802.11a and 802.11g. Within the above categories, some Linksys routers are designed for travel / mobility, some for VPN networking, and some for raw speed.

The Linksys WRT54G is a popular 802.11g Wi-Fi wireless router. Its features include:

  • 54 Mbps 802.11g (sometimes called Wireless-G) Wi-Fi performance
  • integrated Ethernet network switch with four ports for local network connections and one port for Internet or other external network access
  • two external wireless antennas (detachable in some revisions of the product)
  • support for standard network firewall technologies
  • support for standard Wi-Fi security (authentication and encryption) options including WPA and WPA2 (firmware updates required on some older models)
  • LED lights for status indicators including power and link activity

Open source firmware packages for the WRT54G such as DD-WRT also exist, providing overclocking capability and other enhancements.

Routers Similar to the Linksys WRT54G

Linksys has manufactured other routers similar in design and capabilities to WRT54G itself:

  • WRT54GH - features an internal rather than external antenna
  • WRT54GL - comparable hardware but runs embedded Linux, designed to better support third-party router firmware customizations
  • WRT54GS - includes Linksys SpeedBooster wireless bridging technology that increases connection speeds if the client uses a compatible Wi-Fi adapter
  • WRT54GX - utilizes MIMO multiple radio technology (also called SRX, Speed and Range Expansion) to provide significant wireless range and also performance increases
  • WRT54G-TM, WRTU54G-TM - for use with U.S. Internet provider T-Mobile and their mobile phones

The Linksys WRT300N is a popular 802.11n Wi-Fi wireless router and offers Wireless-N performance up to 300 Mbps. The WRT300N utilizes MIMO technology for greatly increased bandwidth and reach over ordinary 802.11g routers. It also supports 256-bit encryption.

The Linksys WRT55AG is a dual-band Wi-Fi wireless router supporting both 802.11a and 802.11g networks.

The Linksys WRT55AG contains two built-in wireless radios, one supporting 5 GHz range signals and the other supporting 2.4 GHz. This allows the WRT55AG to manage networks containing a mix of 802.11a and 802.11b/g clients. The WRT55AG offers standard WPA encryption levels up to 152 bit.

The Linksys BEFW11S4 is an 802.11b Wi-Fi wireless router designed for sharing an Internet connection to a broadband modem. Like many other Linksys wireless routers, the BEFW11S4 includes four Ethernet ports for wired connections. It supports up to 128-bit WEP encryption only (no WPA). Linksys no longer manufactures the BEFW11S4; it can be acquired through various reseller outlets.

The Linksys WRT54G3G-ST is an 802.11g WiFi wireless router that allows mobile Internet connections to be established through cellular data networks. It offers base 54 Mbps Wireless-G performance. This Linksys router features a PC Card slot designed to support cellular data adapters including those for EV-DO networks. The WRT54G3G-ST also offers standard WPA encryption and SPI (Stateful Packet Inspection) firewall capabilities.
