Inserting Images Inline With Aol Mail

If a picture is worth a thousand words, you should be able to cut down on typing by sending pictures, as long as inserting them is easy. In Aol Mail it is drag-and-drop easy.

Aol Mail has also been known as AIM Mail, where "AIM" stood for AOL Instant Messenger, but the Verizon (which purchased AOL in 2015) has discontinued the instant messenger system and moved away from using AIM. It has also slightly changed the email brand styling, going from the all-caps AOL Mail to simply Aol Mail.

Inserting Images Into Aol Mail

While composing the email in Aol Mail, position the cursor where you want the image to appear.

  1. Click the Insert pictures into your mail button in the composition toolbar. This will open a window to navigate to your image on your computer.
  2. When you locate the image file you want to insert, select it and click Open (you can also double-click the file).

You may also drag-and-drop images directly into your email message. To do so, click the image or image file you want to insert and drag it to the Aol Mail tab or page in your browser. The page will change and display two areas in the body of the email:

Drop attachments here is the area where you would drop images or files that you want to attach to the email, but do not want displayed inline. These files will appear as attachments to the email, but will not be displayed in the body of the message.

Drop images here is where you would drop images you want displayed inline, in the body of the email message.

Changing the Location of Inline Images

If you insert an image into the text of your email, but it isn't exactly where you want it to appear, you can move it around by clicking on it and dragging it to a new position.

As you move the image, which will become transparent so you can see the text behind it, look for the cursor within the text; it will move as you drag the image around the message space. Position the cursor where you want the image to appear within the body of the message, and then drop it. The image will shift position to the location you've picked.

Changing the Display Size of Inserted Images

Aol Mail automatically reduces the display size the inserted image. This does not affect the image itself that is attached, only the size at which it displays in the body of the email. Large file size images will still take time to download.

You can make large image files smaller by resizing the image before inserting it into the email to reduce download sizes.

To change the image's displayed size in the body of the email:

  1. Position the mouse cursor over the image.
  2. Click the Settings icon that appears in the top left corner of the image.
  3. Select the size you prefer the image for the image, either small, medium, or large.

Deleting an Inserted Image

If you want to remove an inserted image from the email message your composing, follow these steps:

  1.  Hover the mouse pointer over the unwanted picture.
  2. Click the X located in the top right corner of the image.
