How to Enter Cheat Codes With the Xbox 360 Controller

How you enter cheat codes on the Xbox 360 controller can vary depending on the game you're playing. For example, cheat codes may require you to press specific buttons in a prescribed order to unlock the cheat.

In other cases, such as with Grand Theft Auto IV cheat codes on the Xbox 360, special number codes are entered into a cellphone in the game during play.

In many cases, cheat codes will use abbreviations for the buttons on the controller. Knowing the names and abbreviations for these buttons will make your cheat code life easier—find them defined below.

Entering Cheats for Backward-Compatible Xbox Games

If you are playing an original Xbox game, you may run into a problem because the Xbox 360 controller, unlike the original Xbox controller, does not have black and white buttons.

On the Xbox 360, the black and white buttons are replaced with the right and left bumpers, so the left bumper—number 3 in the image -- replaces the white button, while the right bumper—number 4—replaces the black button.

So, if a cheat code on the Xbox is:

Left, A, Black, X, White, B, B

while playing the same game on the Xbox 360 the code would be:

Left, A, Right Bumper, X, Left Bumper, B, B
