How to Turn Off Your iPhone

turn off iphone

The iPhone goes to sleep by default after it's been inactive for a certain period of time. But even though your iPhone conserves its battery life when it's asleep, there may be circumstances when you want to completely turn off iPhone—especially when the phone's battery is particularly low.

If you're in one of those situations, follow these steps:

  1. Start by holding down the sleep/wake button at the top right-hand corner of the iPhone (on the iPhone 6 series, this button is on the right) for a few seconds
  1. This will bring up a screen with a slider at the top that reads slide to power off
  2. If you don't want to turn off your iPhone, you can get out of this screen by tapping the Cancel button at the bottom of the screen
  3. If you do want to shut down, though, move the slider to the right
  4. After you do this, a progress wheel will appear in the center of the screen and in a few seconds, the iPhone will turn off.

This technique to turn off iPhone applies to every iPhone model, from the original to the latest version.

The Hard Reset Option

There are some instances in which the steps above just won't work, especially when your iPhone is locked up. In that case, you should try a technique called a hard reset. This should only be used when other attempts have failed, but sometimes it's just what you need. To hard reset an iPhone:

  1. Hold down the sleep/wake button and the Home button at the same time
  2. Continue holding them for 10 seconds or more, until the screen goes black and the Apple logo appears
  1. When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons and let the phone start up like normal.
