Facebook is well known for finding old friends, playing games and connecting with people you know, but there is another decidedly professional side to the social media giant: Facebook Pages. These Facebook Pages differ from personal profiles. They are available free to Facebook users to promote their businesses, bands or organizations, and they are set up separately.

You must have a personal Facebook profile before you can set up a business Page.

How to Create A Business Page

Creating a free professional Facebook Page is easy. Log in to your Facebook account and go to Facebook's Create a Page screen. You can reach it by clicking the arrow in the top right corner of your Facebook Timeline or News Feed. Select Create Page from the drop-down menu. You can also reach the Create a Page screen by clicking Page in the left panel of your News Feed and this clicking Create Page.

On the Create a Page screen, click the category that best fits your business. Options are:

  • Local Business or Place
  • Company, Organization or Institution
  • Brand or Product
  • Artist, Band or Public Figure
  • Entertainment
  • Cause or Community

Each category contains a drop-down menu where you enter your business name, address, a further category, address and phone, or further information, depending on the category. You are prompted to read Facebook Pages terms and click Get Started to create the Page.

Facebook walks you through steps to customize your URL, supply a photo, logo (if applicable) and business information, and your first post to the new Page.

You'll probably want to go ahead and add additional content to flesh out your Page. The secret to having a successful professional business page is to post information that interests readers.

Keep it on topic, relatively brief and friendly.

Then, Facebook encourages you to announce your Page to your Friends and supplies several methods to do so. The announcement is optional, but it is the first step in launching your business Page to promote your business or interests.

Promote Your Professional Page

After your professional Page is up and ready for visitors, send the link to your friends, family members and clients encouraging them to come to your Page and—hopefully—Like it. Then, when you add a message or photo to your business Page, they will see your messages in their Facebook News Feeds. Additional ways to promote your Page include:

  • Add your Facebook business Page URL to your email signature to reach out to other individuals who don't know about it.
  • Promote your Page on your business website.
  • Add the Page URL to your business cards and letterhead.
  • Use Facebook paid advertising to place ads on Facebook to draw attention to your Page, or take advantage of Facebook's other ways to promote the Page, such as promoting a specific post.
  • Post high-quality content. When someone shares something they see on your Page, the link goes out to many more individuals.
