How We Tested

Our reviewers spent 14 hours testing one of the most popular electric scooters available. To really get the full experience, we asked them to consider the most important features when using this scooter — like how fast it goes and how comfortable it is to ride — and we've outlined them here so that you, too, know what to look for when shopping.

What to Look for in an Electric Scooter

Durability - Will you be tackling rocky terrain or cruising city streets? Your preferred use will dictate how durable of a scooter you need. If you need something heftier, look for ones that have aluminum frames, which are still lightweight but resistant to corrosion.

Speed - Do you always find yourself in a rush? Some scooters can hit up to 30 miles per hour, while slower models top out around 10 miles per hour.

Portability - Scooters become even more convenient when they can be collapsed and carried. There are a wide variety of designs available, with some weighing less than 15 pounds and others able to fold down in less than three seconds.

Battery life - When it comes to battery life, think about how far you’ll be riding the scooter. If it’s just up the block, you won’t need a long-lasting battery, but to avoid running out of power on a longer journey, look for a model that can score you around 60 to 80 minutes on a single charge. Also, consider how fast the scooter can recharge — some of the leading models need only three hours or so to juice up.

Glion Dolly Electric Scooter

Although our testers felt that this scooter wasn’t very portable because of its heavier weight, they thought that overall, it was a great, fun way to travel back and forth to a local spot. Our testers also liked its front light, which “provides good visibility at night but is also a nice way to keep others aware you’re around, [making it] potentially easier to avoid an accident.” Unfortunately, one of our reviewers felt that the width of the deck got in the way of his comfort while riding the scooter: “You need to put your feet back-to-back like a skateboard instead of next to each other (which can offer better stability).”
