What to Do if Apple TV Will Not Connect to iTunes Services

The Apple TV 4 is among the best streaming solutions for television. Because it hooks up to iTunes there are millions who want to use one even if they only want to listen to the music they already own. Which is great, until for some reason they have a problem connecting to iTunes from their Apple TV. There are lots of potential reasons for this, and you can find and fix them using this simple guide:

What to do?

If your Apple TV cannot connect to iTunes (or iCloud) on your Apple TV then you should work through the following steps:

Try Again

If you get told your system cannot connect to iTunes don’t take the system’s word for it: leave it a moment or two and try again.

Force Restart the Apple TV

The gold standard for every troubleshooting situation, force restarting your Apple TV is often all you need to do to resolve problems like this. To force restart Apple TV, press and hold both the Menu and Home buttons on your Apple Siri Remote for around10 seconds, until the white light at the front of the Apple TV begins flashing and the system restarts. Now try again.

Upgrade the tvOS System Software

If this hasn’t worked then it is possible you might need a tvOS operating system update. Tap through to Settings > System > Software Updates > Update Software and check to see if you have a download available.

If a download is available, download it – or set the Automatically Update feature to On.

Is Your Apple TV Frozen?

If your Apple TV has frozen then you should unplug it from power and plug it in again.

Test Network

If the problem persists, or if your Apple TV cannot even reach the upgrade servers to check for a new software patch then you probably have an Internet connection problem.

You can test your connection in Settings > Network > Connection Type > Network Status. (You can also make sure you are on the correct network in this setting).

How to Check if Apple Services are Working

It is possible there is a fault with Apple’s online services. You can check that all services are operational on Apple’s website. If there is a problem with the service you are trying to use it makes sense to wait a little while, as Apple usually fixes them fast. You should also check your ISP’s service and support page to ensure your broadband connection is working correctly. 

Restart Everything

If you find there is a problem with your connection you should restart everything: your Apple TV, router (or wireless base station) and modem. Switch each one off. You may have to just switch off the power for some of these devices, depending on ​the manufacturer. Leave all three off for a minute or so and then restart them in the following order: modem, base station, Apple TV.

Check for Interference

If you connect your Apple TV to the Internet using Wi-Fi then it is possible you or a neighbor is using an electronic device that is interfering with the wireless network.

The most common sources of such interference include: Microwave ovens, wireless speakers, some monitors and displays, satellite equipment, 2.4GHz and 5GHz phones and some other devices.

If you’ve recently installed an electronic device that might be generating network interference, you can try switching it off. Does your Apple TV problem persist? If it does then you may want to move the new equipment to somewhere  else in your house, or move the Apple TV.

Log Out

It may help to log out of your Apple ID on your Apple TV. You can achieve this in Settings > Accounts > iTunes and App Store and choose Sign Out. You should then sign in again.

Persistent problems may also be resolved if you sign out of your Wi-FI network using Settings > General > Network > Wi-Fi > select your network > click Forget Network.

You should then click Forget Network and Restart your Apple TV (as above). Once your system restarts you should log out of iTunes Store in Settings > iTunes Store > AppleIDs > Sign Out. You should then restart the system and enter your Wi-Fi and account details once again.

Reset the System

The nuclear option is to reset your Apple TV. The reason this is the last option most users will want to use is because it returns your Apple TV to factory condition, meaning you’ll need to set the whole system up all over again from scratch, including apps, passwords and more. You do this in Settings > General > Reset and select Reset All Settings. The process will take a few minutes to complete. You will need to set your system up again and download the apps you wish to use.
