You have Google Assistant or maybe even Bixby on your phone, and it’s got its perks. However, you have heard loads of talk about all the things you can do with Alexa. Although it was once only available to iOS users and a handful of Android devices, Amazon has made the Alexa voice assistant available to almost every smartphone, thanks to the Amazon Android app.

Why might someone wish to use the Amazon mobile app when another assistant is readily available? This is a sampling of ways that you can use voice commands with Alexa.

  • Connect with family and friends by calling or messaging anyone with the Alexa app or an Amazon Echo device.
  • Manage your smart home. Turn on lights, check the locks or adjust your thermostat from any location.
  • Pair it with another Alexa device as a remote control, to access enhanced features or for simplified setup.
  • In addition, Alexa has myriad “skills” that you can enlist using voice commands.

But in order to enjoy all of these features (and more), you must install the Amazon Android app on your phone.

Note

The directions below should apply no matter who made your Android phone: Samsung, Google, Huawei, Xiaomi, etc.

Once you have installed Alexa on your phone, you will need to set it up.

  1. Tap Alexa in your list of apps to open the Amazon app.
  2. Log in using your existing Amazon account information, including your email address (or phone number, if you have a mobile account) and password. Tap the Sign In button.
  3. Select Create a New Account if you do not already have an account with Amazon. Once you have set up a new account, log in to the app with your email address or phone and password.
  4. Tap the Get Started button.
  5. Select your name from the list under Help Alexa Get to Know You. Tap I’m Someone Else if your name is not on the list and provide your information. Once you have selected your name, you can customize it, using a nickname, your full name or whatever you prefer Alexa to use for messaging and calling, although you must provide a first and last name.
  6. Tap Continue when you are ready to proceed.
  7. Tap Allow if you want to give Amazon permission to upload your contacts, which can help you connect with family and friends. (You may have to tap Allow a second time on a security popup, as well.) If you would rather not provide permission at this time, tap Later.
  8. Verify your phone number if you want to send and receive calls and messages with Alexa. The app will send you an SMS to confirm your number. Tap Continue when ready or tap Skip if you do not want to use this feature at this time.
  9. Enter the six-digit verification code you received via text and tap Continue.

That’s all there is to it! Now you are ready to start customizing and using the Amazon Alexa app on your phone.
